english version ALLGEMEIN Sarsaparilla ist eine Kletterpflanze, die zur Gattung der Stechwinden (Smilax) gehört. Die Pflanze kann über 50 Meter lang wachsen, produziert kleine Blüten und je nach Art rote, bläuliche oder schwarze Beeren, welche essbar sind.  Es werden aber unter anderem auch andere Pflanzen mit medizinischen Qualitäten als Sarsaparilla bezeichnet, wie zum Beispiel Hemidesmus indicus (indische Sarsaparilla) und Aralia nudicaulis (Wilde Sarasaparilla) welche in Nordamerika vorkommt. Die Gattung Smilax besteht aus ungefähr 350 Arten, wobei davon 79 Arten in China zu finden sind, 24 Arten in Indien beheimatet sind und 29 Arten in Zentralamerika. Aber sie sind auch beispielsweise in Süd-Amerika, Jamaica und den West-Indies zu finden. Besagte Arten sind aber nicht nur dort, sondern auch in tropischen, subtropischen und gemässigten Zonen weltweit verbreitet (vgl. Salas-Coronado et al. 2017: 233).
